Rishikesh is a small town in the northern state of Uttarakhand, India. Scenically located where the Ganges River comes down from the Himalayas, Rishikesh catapulted to Western fame when the Beatles dropped by for a visit to Maharishi Mahesh Yogi's ashram where they had practised meditation here for weeks and created some beautiful songs. Ashram (was closed til Dec 2015) has been reopened to the public. It comes under Rajaji Tiger Reserve. The town is still known as the World Capital of Yoga. Entry fees to ashram complex ₹600 per person for foreigner, ₹150 for Indian, ₹75 for senior citizen, ₹40 for students (they must carry certificate from their institution). Rishikesh is also the gateway to the Himalayas. The Northern Char Dham Yatra (Four Shrines Sacred Journey) ideally begins from Rishikesh.
