Margao is a city in the western Indian state of Goa. Its Portuguese colonial past is evident in buildings like the 1675 baroque Holy Spirit Church, with its ornate interior and pipe organ. Konkani is the most widely spoken language in Margão, followed closely by English. Portuguese is still spoken and understood by a small number of people. Hindi is also spoken and understood by a majority of the city's population. The dialect ofKonkani in South Goa differs notably from that spoken in North Goa.
